Winter Weather Reminders from the Town of Flower Mound

We’re not quite there yet, but freezing temperatures could pop up any time in north Texas in the coming months. In the case of winter weather, we want you to be prepared. Here are some tips for preventing a burst pipe in your residential fire and yard sprinkler systems.

For residential fire sprinklers:

  • Unless a pipe is burst or there is some other major issue, the system should not be shut off or drained.
  • Keep your home heated to at least 40 degrees. Residential systems are installed with insulation over the pipes, which, combined with a heated house, can prevent freezing.
  • Have your sprinkler company do maintenance 1 to 2 times a year to make sure the system is running correctly.
  • If a pipe does burst and you need to turn off or drain the system, the riser is usually in the garage or a front entry way closet. Drain controls are usually found in the master bedroom closet, with the drain itself located somewhere outside the home.

For yard sprinklers:

  • Turn off the irrigation backflow or reduced pressure zone backflow (RPZ) device. This will prevent the irrigation system main line from leaking water and flooding your yard and street.
  • In older homes, the backflow device is typically located near the street. In newer homes, the device is typically located in the front yard.
  • Wrap and cover your outside spigots.

We’re wishing everyone a safe, warm, and dry winter.
