Building a Safe Community (Development)
The Fire Marshal's Office sits on the Town’s Development Review Committee, which reviews all new development in Flower Mound. By participating in this committee, the Fire Marshal's Office is able to provide input into building a safer community.
The Fire Marshal's Office develops, amends, and adopts the current fire codes for Flower Mound. Fire codes and standards establish minimum requirements for the construction of building and life safety systems. The Town is under the 2021 International Fire Code (IFC) with locally adopted North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) amendments.
The International Fire Code serves as the required compliance code along with other building and safety regulations. Other responsibilities include issuing operational permits, plan review for construction, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, and other life safety systems regulated by this code.
Fire Inspections
Many fires can be prevented through fire inspections and code enforcement. The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for conducting a regular fire inspection program of all public buildings to improve public safety. Fire inspections are performed by certified fire inspectors on a predetermined schedule. Fire Inspectors also perform a wide array of other necessary and requested inspections of commercial and residential properties to ensure compliance with adopted codes and State Law.
Fire Investigations
Fire investigation serves as another mechanism employed by the Fire Marshal's Office to prevent fires. By determining the cause and origin of a fire, the Fire Marshal's Office can better educate and protect the public from the dangers of fire and possibly prevent repeat occurrences through public education. If a fire is determined to be suspicious or a result of arson, a full investigation is completed by certified fire scene investigators. This office strives to combat the crime of arson and unlawful burning. Also at the Open House, there are several interactive activities for residents. Children have the opportunity to spray water through a fire hose to extinguish an actual fire which is controlled by firefighters, families can tour the fire safety trailer which is capable of conducting smoke house training and severe weather simulation, and the Fire Prevention Office conducts fire extinguisher training for the business community.
